Episode 4: From WRCX to WFMT: a Grammy-nominated classical engineer dishes about working at some of Chicago's top rock radio stations.

Upcoming Gigs: November 8 - Korngold Concerto with the Erie Philharmonic in Pennsylvania, November 11 - Brahms Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic in London, November 14-16 - residency at Morehead State University in Kentucky

Mailbox Mayhem: Bill (a different Bill) writes: "Being a longtime metal fan with only the very most glancing and superficial knowledge of classical, (own 1000+ CDs, maybe a dozen of which are classical) Stringendo has opened my eyes into a whole new realm. It has lead me to a curiosity and love for classical that Yngwie Malmsteen could not inspire, and I am a pretty big fan of his. Yesterday, I stumbled into "Instrument off the Devil", and bought it immediately. Thanks to these recordings, I have my first clues as to what classical I actually do like. Thank you for the first steps into broadening my musical horizons."

A conversation with Grammy-nominated classical engineer Bill Maylone.  Bill talks about working as an engineer at some of Chicago's top rock radio stations, which types of microphones he uses,

Bill's Classical Recommendations:

Bach - The Italian Concerto
Beethoven - Egmont Overture
Mendelssohn - String Quartet Op. 44 No. 1 (especially the 4th movement)

Upcoming Gigs: September 9 - Beethoven Concerto with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, September 12 and 13 - Tchaikovsky Concerto with the Boise Philharmonic, September 21 - recital in New York (styles including baroque, virtuoso romantic, blues, Celtic, American fiddling, Latin, and heavy metal)

Mailbox Mayhem: Peter writes "I just wanted to thank you for turning me on to classical music. I'm 36 years old and have been a lifelong fan of heavy metal. Metallica and Slayer are a couple of my favorites... I've always found classical music to be boring, but that's because I never gave it a chance and really listened to it. Then one day I heard you on the radio when you played some AC/DC and Zeppelin on the violin along with a classical piece and I was blown away. I immediately went out and bought "Storming the Citadel" and have been a fan of yours ever since. I now have CDs by Mozart, Bartok, Debussy and others alongside CDs by Motorhead, Megadeth and Sepultura. Thank you for broadening my horizons." Tom writes: "Thank you for introducing me to the classical side of music - It's now a preset on my radio in the truck."

A conversation with my rock violin hero, Mark Wood, inventor of the 7-string Viper electric violin. Includes tracks from two of Mark's recordings: "Violator" from "Against the Grain" and "Tortured Soul" from "Van Helsing's Curse."

Mark's Classical Recommendations:
Mahler - Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection Symphony"
Mahler - Symphony No. 8 "Symphony of a Thousand"
Bartok - Concerto for Orchestra
Prokofiev - Violin Concerto No. 2
Brahms - anything!
Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring

Episode 1: Thrash! violinist Philip Pan’s homage to speed metal

Mailbox Mayhem: Michael writes: “I was at your show tonight and enjoyed it immensely! This was the first "classical" show I have been to, and since I knew the names, Vivaldi and Barton, I figured what the hell ...although I'm normally seen at a Dave Matthews Band concert! I just wanted to let you know, not that you need it, that you are doing a wonderful job and you really opened my eyes tonight. I am hoping to see you in another performance soon!”

Philip Pan, concertmaster of the Jacksonville Symphony in Florida, talks about discovering rock music, learning how to play electric violin, and composing a speed metal-inspired piece for solo violin.  Includes Rachel Barton Pine’s performance of “Thrash.”

Philip's Classical Recommendations:
Strauss - Also Sprach Zarathustra
Vivaldi - The Four Seasons

total playing time: 16:23
